Beauty comes in all colors…

A friend of my SIL started an amazing project called “50 Shades of Black”

Since he can explain it way better than I ever could, here’s a snippet from the website

“50 Shades of Black is about affirming the beauty found in every human being and critically examining the influential nature of sexuality & skin tone in the formation of identity.”

I feel like I look past the color of ones skin or their sexuality to see the real person underneath and it saddens me to think that there are people who don’t. It also makes me sad that we need an eye opening project to make us more accepting of our own and other people’s differences.

I think being different is what you make of it. It can be a bad thing if you let it, but it can also be a great thing. I tell my kids being different is awesome!  Who wants to be normal?!

Apparently my freckles are different. I’ve lived with them all of my life, but some people think they are the most amazing/weird/ugly/cool things.  I used to get someone weekly who would comment on how many freckles I have, how I got them, why do I have so many, giving them cute little names like “angel kisses” and sometimes not so cute names.  When I was in school I would come across kids who were rude about it or didn’t understand or thought they were ugly, but there were also people who didn’t care about them and even those who liked them.  Heck, just a couple of weeks ago I went to the dermatologist and there was a PA checking me out first and she said, “wow, you sure do have a lot of freckles!”  I thought it was amusing because surely if someone is working in a derm office they know about freckles and have seen them lots, but maybe not.  It didn’t offend me though.  People are curious about “different”, but that doesn’t make it a bad thing.  Some people think freckles are cool and some people don’t like them.  To each their own I suppose.  I don’t have a choice really since they aren’t going anywhere, but I’ve learned to love my freckles and embrace what makes me different.  I hope everyone can learn to love their differences whether it’s the color of your skin, your sexuality, your smile, your weight, etc.

I know the project goes much deeper than I can even comprehend, but this was my way of relating.  I think it’s a cool project and I wanted to spread the word.  Check out the website for a more in depth look into the 50 Shades of Black project and then check out the link at the bottom of this post to see how you can show your support!

Camo craze…

I remember back when I was around 16-17 I think (maybe 15), camo/military clothing was in “fashion”.  Well, in fashion to me back then was whatever was being sold at my favorite mall shops like 5-7-9 and a store that I can’t remember the exact name, but they sold every color of Bongo jeans imaginable and there were buttons instead of zippers for the flies!  Sounds very fashionable, right?!  It was the early nineties, cut me a little slack, k?  😉

I distinctly remember a specific outfit.  I had gone to my uncle’s that day.  I probably remember because my mom took photos and I shot a gun for one of the first times.  I was wearing camo shorts, a sleeveless army green tee with a big star on the front and dog tags.  Not gonna lie, dressed in camo and shooting a gun…kinda felt like a badass.  Even though I wasn’t.  lol.  I’m not sure it was my best look, but it’s cool to remember it so clearly and then to see camo back into style.

Btw, is all fashion cringe worthy when you look back on it years later?  I think I’ve always taken a little risk with the way I dress, but I’ve always felt like my ultimate goal is to be classic/timeless with some edge/flair thrown in for fun.  After babies I got myself dressed just so I wouldn’t be naked and trust me, I would have worn a trash bag rather than go nekkie back then!  But now, 12 yrs later, I’m dressing more for me and because I care what I’m wearing.  I feel like I’m back in my younger years again though trying to find my style.  I guess it’s a process and after being out of the loop for 12 yrs there’s going to be an adjustment period.

Like I was saying, camo is BACK!  And, like when I was in my teens, I’m all over it.  Green is my favorite color.  There are a few shades of green that I don’t like, but for the most part, I love it.  I think it stems back to when I had a small modeling gig.  I was a mannequin model for the day and when I came in, the girl showing me the clothes they picked out for me said, “oh, awesome, green is YOUR color!”  Well, I liked green before, but her saying that green looked good on me, well…that was the clincher!

*random reminiscning moment* I had the worst guy partner in my window that day.  You’re supposed to be like a mannequin and that dude would not stay still and kept talking to me.  He was totally making me look bad!  😛

I know that camo was being worn over the summer, but I’m totally ready for my fall wardrobe so all my camo ideas are focused on cooler weather.

Camouflage skinnies with a grey top is probably my favorite combination right now!  I think it’s so wearable and easy to put together

Another easy combo…white button down with camo skinnies

And we can’t leave out camo with chambray!

I’m clearly loving the camouflage skinny jeans, but I’m not opposed to a camo utility jacket, shirt, shoes or accessories!

Just not all together!  That would be a bit much for me.  😛
Would you wear camouflage or skip this trend?  If so, what’s you’re favorite way to wear it?

Trend :: Jumpsuits

I’m not a big fan of change, so it takes me a year or two to warm up to new fashion trends.  Of course the downside of taking a while to warm up to something, usually means I jump on the band wagon while the rest of the world is slowly moving on to a new trend.  I’m usually one step behind, but that’s ok with me.  😉

Like always, I’m a little late to the party with the jumpsuit trend.  I thought it was new this year, but when I googled it, apparently it is definitely not new.  *sigh*

Anywho, I didn’t think I would like this trend at all.  I don’t have a good track record with one piece items (I guess I have a longer torso so the size I need for the torso, doesn’t usually match the size I need for my clothing size) so when I picked up a jumpsuit the other day to try on, I really didn’t expect to like it.  I thought it was pretty though so I grabbed it to try it on.

Imagine my surprise when I put it on and kinda didn’t want to take it off.  It was loose and comfy, but I felt stylish.  I could see it with some barely there sandal heels, but also cute with flats & a jean jacket.  I ended up leaving without it because honestly, I’m still not confident in what looks good on me and what doesn’t, so I wasn’t convinced that I would wear it past this summer.  It was also $130, which would have been okay if I wore the heck out of it for a year or two, but IMO a little steep for a one hit wonder outfit.  I have been thinking about it ever since though so I think I’m going to be on the hunt for a more affordable version.

Here‘s the one I tried on.  In hindsight, I probably should have tried on the next size down, but I was accounting for my long(ish) torso and yes, the leg length is a little LONG (I’m only 5’4″  :))

What’s more motivating that a 74yo CrossFitting grandma?  Check out this article I read in Fitness Magazine this past weekend.  If this isn’t motivating, I don’t know what is!

Reading stories like that really impress me, but they also light a little fire under me and make me want to go workout.  So on that note…check out this awesome Booty Blaster Workout from FitnessRx Mag.  I’m printing it out and putting it on my gym to-do list pronto!

Off the wagon…

Hmmm, let’s see how many things I can drop the ball on…eating healthy, 365 project, LiveFit, one hundred push ups, running, sugar consumption…I’m sure there are more, but these are the ones I can think of right now.  I’d say I’ve fallen a bit off the wagon.

It’s a new day though.  I’m gonna pick myself up, dust myself off and do better.  I had already decided to let go of LiveFit.  I wanted to train for a run and I didn’t want such a regimented weight training workout.  Plus, being summer time, I’m not able to get to the gym much.  I also think I’ve pretty much screwed my 366.  Miss a couple days…no biggie.  Miss a week or two…no biggie.  Miss more days than I can count…366 officially dead.

Alrighty then, enough about how much I suck.  How about let’s move on, make new goals and focus on what I’ve been doing lately that makes me happy!

New goals…

start my 100 push ups over again.

continue my race training (thanks to having a race deadline that makes me stick to running even if I’ve slacked in my training slightly)

eat healthier and get back on a gym schedule

detox on sugar AGAIN!

Things that I’ve done lately that make me happy…

Ran a 5k with my whole family (daddy too, he’s just not in the pic).  It was my 9yo’s first 5k ever and he did awesome!

Swam with dolphins…

Had a fun day with the kids at the water park

Got a new bathing suit and quite possibly have a little bit of abs showing through (although that was before dropping the ball and you’d be surprised at how fast that tummy bloats when you stop being good!).

Got the first week of school behind us and I’ve been doing well making lunches so far…

Yeah, yeah, I know it’s only been a week, but I’m focusing on the good here!  Hello!  No debbie downers, got it?!

How about you all…have you screwed up lately?  Slacked on your training?  Haven’t been eating as healthy as you should have been?  You are not alone!

Be YOU!

You were born to be real, not to be perfect. You are here to be you, not to live someone else’s life.

Every day you make some progress and every day you make a few mistakes. Through it all, your wisdom continues to grow and your experience continues to broaden.

Be gentle with yourself. Accept who you are, where you have been, and what you have to work with, for in this moment you can make positive use of it all.

Reach in and touch the purpose that makes you feel most alive. The world around you is filled with places where that purpose can do great things.

It is never too late to offer your unique and genuine gifts to life. Now is the time to do great things, even in the smallest of ways.

Choose to fully and graciously live life as it comes. The richest rewards by far are the ones to which you most sincerely give of yourself.

Trying to be trendy…

I’m SO not the most trendy dresser.  I always think people look so cute in their trendy outfits, but I have a really hard time getting out of my comfort zone.  My closet is full of staples, you know, those things that you can wear ALL the time, that go with everything…black slacks, black tank/cami, white tank/cami, black sweater, grey sweater, white slacks and then I have dressy jeans & slacker jeans and a whole bunch of t-shirts.  I’m not afraid of colors, but the problem is that I tend to always buy things I can get a lot of use out of.  In my every day wear, I’m a jeans/t-shirt/flops kind of girl.  I like to be comfortable and these things make me comfortable.  If I’m not in my jeans, tee & flops, then I’m in my groove crops, sports bra, tee & tennis shoes.  However, now that I’m comfortable in my skin again and I feel good about myself, I find myself trying to be a little more trendy in how I dress.  I am terrible at accessorizing and being a little OCD, it’s really hard to not be so matchy matchy which I know is BAD!  But thanks to Pinterest and some super inspirational online friends, little by little I feel like I’m getting better with my outfits.  Now, of course, I forgot my hoop earrings in these pics and don’t forget, I’m still a work in progress and yes, I’m still in JEANS, but…here’s my attempt at being somewhat trendy.  Well, I guess it’s really just the belt & scarf that I added that make it “trendy” and different from my usual wear, but it’s baby steps, right?!  🙂

*fun fact…the first time I wore this sweater, Boo (8yo), told me I looked like an elf.  The second time I wore it, he said I really had to stop wearing it because I reminded him of a leprecaun!  lol.  Boys!

Christmas goodies….

One of my favorite online sites to visit is Pinterest.  For those of you who aren’t familiar, it’s a virtual cork board of sorts, where you “pin” things you like from all over the internet.  You find all kinds of things from crafts to make, to photos you like, to cool gadgets you must have.

With Christmas right around the corner, I found this recycled bow tutorial just in time!

And what’s a gift without gift tags?!  I didn’t find all of these on Pinterest, but check out these super cool printable tags.  Maybe I’ll take back all the sticker tags I just bought today and print these instead!

tags from MarthaStewart.com found via this blog along with lots of other cute tags!

these gorgeous babies are from Jones Design Company.  You have to sign up and they will send you the pdf.

I have to include these super cute owl gift tags from My Owl Barn!

I’m loving these sweet tags from Sass & Peril (found via The Bakery Spot)

I found these via Flourish

And, finally…How cute are these hand drawn designs from Raggedy Scrappin’?  The kids would love to color some tags to stick on presents!

Monday Motivation

Let’s talk lululemon.  For those of you who haven’t heard of lululemon, they are the makers of some amazing workout wear.  I found them a couple years ago and now I hate to wear any other brand workout pants.  They make all kinds of gear, but their pants are A-mazing!   However, in addition to their super awesome workout wear, they have this cool manifesto that they print on everything from the reusable bags that they put your purchases in to shirts and pants.  There’s some really great advice here and since it is the end of the year and all, maybe you’ll want to add one or two to your New Years resolution.  😉

Here are some of my favorites from the manifesto…

Happy Monday!!  Let’s kick this week’s butt!!
