A room without books…

roomwithoutbooksimg source

I don’t think I would have considered myself a big reader when I was younger.  The Babysitters Club series sticks out the most in my mind from my pre-teen/early teen years.  But once I grew out of them, I don’t remember reading much after that.

When I was 15, I went to visit my sister and her husband in New Jersey, and it was there that I began to get the itch to start reading more.  Since they’re both big readers, there were a ton of books around the house, so one day while they were at work, I browsed the bookshelves and picked up Dragon Tears by Dean Koontz.  I started reading and could not put it down!

It wasn’t until I married my husband that I started exploring my love of reading more.  It was difficult at first to find books that I liked (there’s only so many Dean Koontz novels! ;)).  Sometimes when I would try to read a book, it would take me forever and I wasn’t comprehending what I was reading so then I would get bored and not finish it.  If it doesn’t grab my attention pretty quickly, I can read until I’m blue in the face, but I won’t retain any of the information.  In the beginning I mostly stuck with authors I knew I liked.

I’ve branched out some since then.  I’ve learned what to look for in a book to see if it’s a good fit for me and for awhile I thought I only liked murder/sci-fi/mystery books, but as it turns out I like romance, drama and memoirs too.  Thanks to the internet (where I can read reviews) and the Kindle (where I can try before I buy), I’ve been enjoying reading a lot more lately.  I still have my lulls where I won’t read for months at a time though, so one of my 2014 goals is to read more…14 books to be exact.  14 in 2014…ha! I’m so clever, eh?  I know, it doesn’t seem like a lot, but I’ve probably averaged 10 (or less) over the last two years so I think 14 is a pretty good start.

We’re only a quarter into the new year and I’m happy to report that I’m almost halfway to my goall!  Woohoo!!

Now that I’m reading on the Kindle most of the time, I found out that there’s a downside to digital reading.  A screenshot of books doesn’t give me near as much satisfaction as a stack of real books.

To remedy this, I took a little trip to the bookstore…roamed around, gathering up as many books as I could find and snapped a pic!  I could only find four of the ones I read, but I was happy seeing them all together. 🙂

DSCF2578-Edit

My favorite of the ones I’ve read lately is probably Glitter and Glue.  It’s a memoir about the relationship between mothers and daughters.  There were so many parts that resonated with me as both a daughter and a mother of a daughter.  I really enjoyed this book.  Almost enough to buy a hard copy of it!

While I liked all of the books and don’t regret reading any of them, my least favorite is probably The Story of Beautiful Girl.  It was a nice story, but I didn’t like how they dealt with certain characters and it had it’s slow moments.

Brain on Fire, The Fault in Our Stars and the Husband’s Secret were all great reads!  One for the Money was a fun easy read and I’ll likely read more in the series, but some of the 80’s references I just couldn’t relate to.  For example, when she got dressed for the day she wore bike shorts with a big t-shirt, big slouchy socks, sneakers, big hair and a headband and that was an awesome outfit to her.  I know it’s typical 80’s, but I just couldn’t take her seriously!

I’m currently on my 7th book,  Eleanor and Park.  An easy read about the romance between two teen outcasts.  I’m liking it a lot so far!

I’m always looking for books to add to my want-to-read list so tell me, what good books have you read lately?  Anything on your to-read list that you can’t wait to start reading?

It’s here! It’s here!

Welcome to the new and improved “Food, Sweat and Inspiration”!

Obviously, not only does it have a new design and web home (no more katiehigg.wordpress.com!), but I changed the name.

I started my blog in 2011 after I quit the photography business.  I was never in love with my blog name, but I didn’t end up blogging that much so it didn’t really bother me.  Until now.  In 2013 I started blogging a lot more frequently and the blog name/design were really starting to irk me.

So, last week, I took the plunge…

Food, Sweat and Inspiration is now

editable_header_latte3.jpg

I know what you’re thinking.  What the heck is a freckled latte?  Well, I won’t bore you with my brainstorming thought stream, but basically, I have freckles and I like lattes so I put them together and wham!  Freckled Latte was born!  I was hesitant at first, asking friends/family what they thought, testing the waters, but the more I thought about it, the more it grew on me and now I absolutely LOVE it!

As far as the content, I have all the old posts & photos on here and I will be posting the same type of randomness.  😉

The old blog will stay up for now, but all new posts will be over here, so you’ll need to subscribe/follow/like this page or you won’t see any of my new content!

*gasp* None of my new content?!! Don’t let that happen!

Follow/like/subscribe now so we can stay friends!  I love my readers and I don’t want to leave any of you behind.

Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest are all still the same so if you are following there, you are good to go!

My new blog home makes me absolutely giddy!  I hope you love her as much as I do.  I’m so excited to finally post here!  I’ll still be making tweaks here and there, but for the most part….

Welcome to my new home!  Grab a latte, get cozy and stay awhile!

*p.s. if you notice a link that doesn’t work or some other technology fail, please shoot me a message! I tried to check everything, but I have links everywhere! 😉

Turnin’ this dreary day around…

It’s looks like this outside today…

IMG_6855

and to make matters worse, my hair is so oily I have to hide it under a hat (because I’m too lazy to wash it :P)

IMG_6831-1

Considering the weather and my hair, I contemplated snuggling under a blanket and reading all day

IMG_6857

but I also decided I didn’t want a dreary mood to go with this dreary day, so I brightened up my day by painting my nails a summery coral color (Essie // enuf is enuf),

IMG_6824

then I got dressed in my favorite rain boots, drank a hot cup of java from my favorite mug and hung out with my sweet Lucy!

IMG_6847

To top it off, when I hopped in the car to get lunch, “Happy” by Pharrell was blasting through my speakers. I’d say the universe agrees with my plan to turn this dreary day into a (internally) sunny one. 😉

Hope your hump day was as sunny as mine!

Because everything tastes better in a Vitamix

*drumroll please*

I am now the proud new owner of this gorgeous Vitamix!

IMG_6583

I’ve been using my faithful Ninja blender (which I never had any complaints about!) for a couple of years now

But, I always had a twinge of the “i-want’s” whenever I saw recipes that used a Vitamix

For probably a little over a year I’ve been coveting this beast of a machine, but I always told myself that it was way more machine than I needed and I don’t use a blender near enough to justify the cost, blah, blah, blah.

You know, all the responsible stuff you’re supposed to tell yourself when debating a big purchase

*insert Amex rewards fairies*

My American Express points had recently been burning a serious hole in my pocket and after drooling over the Vitamix for the millionth time, it suddenly dawned on me that I might have enough points to buy one!

Turns out I had just enough! While researching different models, I ran across a blogger who said that everything taste better when blended with her Vitamix.  I laughed and thought it was a bit overkill, but that didn’t keep me from using it as an example of why I needed one when telling my husband that I was going to order it (even though he didn’t care what I bought).

7-10 days later, my new BFF arrived on my doorstep!

Let me tell you, I am definitely drinking the kool-aid! The first thing I made was almond milk.  My husband uses it in his cereal in the morning and I use it in my smoothies so I was excited to make my own. Holy cow.  The Vitamix was scary powerful and grinded the shiz out of those almonds!  However, as much fun as it was to pulverize some almonds, I came to the realization that for me, it was too much work to do for the milk to expire in a few days. Plus, my husband prefers the consistency of the store bought milk. A fact that almost had him sleeping on the couch!

I mean, “hello, I just soaked premium almonds for 8hrs, blended the bajeezies out of ’em, separated the “milk” from the almond meal by squeezing it through a specially bought nut sack (yes, a nut sack!) and you’re telling me that you prefer the store bought processed crap over my freshly-squeezed-made-with-love almond milk?! You take it back right now mister!”

After I calmed down though, I accepted that the store bought and homemade did indeed taste a little different and deep down, I’m kinda glad he didn’t like the fresh one better. Otherwise he would have had me making this stuff every few days and then it would have resembled work and taken all the fun out of it! 😛

DSCF2427-Edit copy

I haven’t used the blender a ton yet.  I need to tackle a soup or something big, but last week I made my first smoothie in her (yep, she’s a her. That may be a little sexist of me, but she just seems like a her). Um, all I can say is…that blogger chick was NOT lying when she said EVERYTHING tastes better in a Vitamix!  I used to love the consistency of the smoothies in my Ninja.  I never had a problem with big chunks or anything and I still think it did a decent job, but, wow, the smoothness and melding of flavors from the Vitamix was uh-mazing!

I know it doesn’t look very appealing, but here it is before blending.  Before you ask, YES, it was delicious!  Tasted like an orange creamsicle!

photo 3

I threw in…1/2 avocado, 1-1.5 cups orange juice, 1/2 frozen banana, 1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder and a dash of honey

orangecreamsiclesmoothie

As if you needed more of a reason to own a Vitamix…during my research of the different models I found the holy grail of selling points. Did you know that to clean the blender, you just put warm water with a few drops of dish soap and blend it for 60sec?! What?! Yes, my friends, it is indeed as awesome as you are imagining. If you ever thought about buying one, DO IT! You won’t regret it!

And just because it’s half “OMG” and half “Whoa, I can’t believe it blended that”, check out one thing that may taste better in a Vitamix, but you probably shouldn’t drink it.  😉

Grumpy or Just PMS’ing?

I’m the biggest grump today

Grumpy-Cat1

I fussed at the kids for no good reason and I’m pretty sure it’s because I needed to workout and I desperately did not want to.

I know I’m supposed to say, “Ooooh, I just love working out and taking care of my body!”

But, the truth is, I workout because I have to

because I should

because I want to live a long life

because I don’t want to see my pants size (or the scale) keep going up

because I know that staying active is a large part of staying healthy

because I want to set a good example for my kids

because I know that in the grand scheme of things, I’m a happier person when I’m working out and eating healthy

But, I hate it.

If it were up to me, I’d stay in the house all day,

watching movies, playing games, reading, eating, etc.

Obviously I’d get tired of this if that’s all I did so I do like getting out of the house occasionally too.

The point is, I’m a grump today and working out helped a little, but not a lot.

So maybe I’m pms’ing too.

ThoughtsDuringPMS-50112

All I know is that I want to curl up on the couch and watch movies, or surf the internet or read a book

Eating too.  I like to eat.

And, just because it’s pretty much how I feel today.

PMS (1)

Sadly this only goes for my husband and kids.  I hold my crazy in for everyone else.

Monday Morning Ramblings

Seriously ya’ll, my weekend flew by.

I wanted to get my tree taken down, but here I am on Monday, with the tree still up!  It WILL get taken down this week danggit!

IMG_6321-1-2

I am trying to get more organized.  It’s one of my New Years goals (goals that I need to post so I can visualize and make them happen, but yeah, still need to get that written up).  I bought a cute new planner.  Nothing special, but it’s a place to write out my important dates so I can see them all laid out.  I have tried and tried to get with the digital planning, but I need to write it out, with a pen & paper and actually SEE it.  My husband does not understand because he’s such a digital planner type of guy, but it not only helps me remember things, but it motivates me to stay on track.

2014 planner

I also started Shaun T’s T25 workout by Beachbody last week.  **our living room has been converted to the exercise room so that’s why the table is moved in the photo above**  Today starts week 2!  My hubby is doing it with me so that is helping me stay accountable.  But last night I wrote out my workout calendar for the month and hung it by my desk.  I can’t even tell you how happy it makes me.  It’s just so cute and structured.  I love seeing it all written out and planned!

2014-01-13_0001

Now if I could get on track with my eating and meal planning, I’d be golden!  That is on the agenda for this week.  Over the weekend, we had a birthday party, it was rainy and gloomy, my teen was doing a 31-page extra credit history packet (that I cursed her under my breath for because if her grade was better she wouldn’t have to spend hours trying to bring it up with EC!) and also working on a science fair board.  Ugh.  And now it’s Monday and my precious weekend is over.

*sigh*

Oh well….it does no good to complain about it now, does it?  Just gotta pull on the big girl panties and get on with the week!

As a parting note, I read this quote today and I really (like super really) loved it.

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime. ~ Mark Twain

I’m not sure I would have fully grasped it before going to France last year, but as much as traveling gives me anxiety and as much as I love my comforts of home and long for them while I’m away, there was something really special about experiencing the way other people live.  I don’t want to stay in my one corner of the earth for my entire life.

just over here watching ice melt.

2014-01-08_0008

I’ve had major A.D.D. trying to blog lately.

I deleted 3 blog posts that were 90% finished, but weren’t relevant anymore

I have ideas, but can’t seem to get them typed in a timely manner

*sigh*

must.

focus.

I got some sweet Hunter boots and a new purse as belated Christmas presents, but it’s been so blasted cold and I haven’t gotten dressed out of workout clothes, sweats or jeans & a tee yet so I’m waiting to blog those properly.  Although if you follow me on Instagram, you’ve already gotten a sneak peek at the purse.  😉

In other news, here in FL we had a bit of a cold snap.  It was so cold I had to drip all of the faucets in the house overnight to make sure the pipes didn’t freeze.  Okay, it’s debatable whether I had to drip them or not (newer house and not sure if that’s outdated advice), but the news people were fuh-reaking out about the temperatures and they told me to do it.  So, we dripped…all night…on all 6 faucets.

Last night we turned the sprinklers off, but apparently not before they had already started up so this morning we woke up to icicles in the yard!  The kids thought it was uber cool and obviously I did too since I spent 30 min taking macro photos of them in the cold.  😛

Happy New Year!

For the last couple of years we’ve let the kids stay up and ring in the New Year with us.  They think it’s awesome to stay up until midnight and get to drink sparkling cider out of wine glasses.  🙂

My 15sec recap of 2013

My first attempt at our year in review. #flipagram made with @flipagramapp♫ Music: Ingrid Michaelson - All Love

Wishing you…

blogChristmas

from my house to yours!

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, or a Happy whatever you celebrate.  🙂

The month leading up to Christmas, wasn’t so happy and pleasant.  We lost a beloved grandfather and family member of my SIL was seriously injured (but will be okay).  Honestly, I couldn’t wait for the holidays to be over and start 2014.  But, the month is ending nicely.

Last week I took the kids for a quick trip to Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party at Disney.  We don’t go to Disney World very often, but it’s nice to be able to have a quick getaway that the kids enjoy.

On Christmas Eve we headed to my MIL’s and had Christmas with my husbands side of the family.  It was a tradition started before we had any kids and while it’s gotten earlier in the day through the years, this was our 15th year celebrating on Christmas Eve.  It’s a time that is just for us and we all look forward to it.  I score every year with my gifts, but this year I got this sweet Tory Burch wrap bracelet to add to my collection.

945828_10202157549875563_876625101_n

On Christmas we unwrap all our gifts at the house and then head to celebrate Christmas with my side of the family.  This year we had two celebrations because my sister could only come up the weekend before Christmas.

We still have two extended family Christmas celebrations and then we’ll be done and ready for the new year!

May 2014 bring you much health and happiness!

30 day Challenge Wrap-Up

30-day-challenge-starts-here

Okay, so it’s fess up time. You may have noticed a little radio silence lately. No excuses really. I could tell you that I was stressed, I had other things on my mind, I pulled something in my neck, etc. All true things, but it is what it is.

I was doing SO well too. Even after a couple of hiccups, I was able to pull it back together, but once I pulled a muscle in my neck (last Monday), I fell and didn’t get back up…just laid on the road and let the wagon ride off without me.

Time to call the wagon back though. No, not another challenge. With the holidays afoot, I know I won’t stick to it.

But it’s about balance.

G055-TNH-Mindfulness-is-a-source-of-happiness-09_large

I’m going to continue making water a priority and try to get a workout in 3-4 days a week (hopefully more).

I realized that being active is good for me. I would be in a horrible mood, but once I got my workout in, I felt so much better. Even if I hated it while I was doing it, I was happy that I made it happen. I did realize that some days I felt like my 30 min weren’t very productive, even though I was technically doing something. Which goes against everything I believe in and part of the reason that I slacked off. If you bust your butt for 15 min, you can burn more calories in that short workout than you would walking for 30 min and even though it’s not all about calories, I think the 15 min busting your butt should count as exercise for the day. I think a better goal to have set for myself would have just been to “sweat every day” or maybe 6 out of 7 days. My brain needed a rest. I kept wanting a day “off” that I didn’t have to think about it.

Live and learn, eh? Now it’s on to Thanksgiving and Christmas! Did you know Christmas is only 28 days away?! I haven’t even started my shopping yet and as fast as the days have been flying by, 28 days is going to pass in no time!

But for now, I’m just concentrating on Thanksgiving.  One holiday at a time for me!

Thanksgiving-Christmas

Hope everyone has a great holiday weekend! My kids are out of school as of tomorrow, we are celebrating turkey day with extended family, and on Friday, it’s our annual visit to a holiday craft show downtown.  Fun times!!  🙂
