brunch date :: #whatiwore

I think brunch might be my favorite meal.  You don’t have to get up super early to make it to a restaurant before they get busy and you can eat breakfast or lunch, depending on your mood that day.  Hubs & I had the weekend to ourselves so in my quest to try more local restaurants, I chose Orsay for our brunch.  To be honest, I’d had brunch there once before, but it was good and the hubs hadn’t been there yet.  Sadly, I got zero pics of our food or anything helpful like that, but I can tell you that it was delicious yet again!  I ordered the daily quiche with side salad and the hubs had Steak Frites (fancy name for steak & fries).

Although I didn’t get any food pics or couple pics, I did manage to get some photos of my brunch outfit.  I was pumped to finally wear my polka dot jog pants!  I don’t know why I didn’t think to try to pair them with a chambray shirt.  I thought it looked cute together, but I’m new at this style/fashion thing so maybe I’m crazy.  😉  I wasn’t in love with my shoe choice, but I felt like it was my best option.  My favorite shoe with these pants are my Louboutin black pumps, but a heel seemed too dressy (I wasn’t in the mood to wear one anyway) and a flat just didn’t look right.

In case you aren’t following me on Instagram (which btw, why not?!), my hubs surprised me with a Maya Brenner initial necklace on Friday.  I’ve been oohing & ahhing over them for a couple of months so I was super excited to finally have one.  It’s a delicate and dainty little thing and I love it.  I’ve worn it daily since it arrived!  It’s hard to see in the above pic, but I tried to crop it closer so you can get a better look.

Avocado Tuna Wrap

I love the internet.  She’s so useful!  Yes, she. The internet is obviously a girl, duh. The other day I was searching the kitchen for something to eat.  I’m trying to eat at home more, but I’m terrible at planning my meals and I haven’t had a big grocery trip lately.  I found a pack of tuna and thought, ok, I can do something with this, but I don’t want to use mayo.  Hmm, I still had 1/2 an avocado from the day before, maybe i can use that?  This is where the Internet was oh so helpful. I figured someone had to have made tuna salad with avocado before, so I did a quick search to find some ideas.

The result of my searching is below and trust me blogland, it was DELICIOUS!
image

1 pack of tuna (2.6 oz)
1/2 avocado
1 tbsp Greek yogurt
Chopped onion
Splash of lemon juice
Salt & Pepper to taste

Mash avocado & mix with Greek yogurt until well mixed. Mix in onions & lemon juice. Once you have it all mixed well, add the tuna.

Thats it!  Now, eat up!  You can eat it by itself, eat it with crackers, eat it on a wrap, eat it on bread…any way you like it!  I ate the whole wrap, but it’s so filling I would have been happy to eat half with a cup of soup or with veggies or fruit. Lettuce & tomato would have completed this sandwich nicely, but alas, my fridge had neither.

A good deal + #whatiwore

I have a Kohl’s right around the corner from me, but I don’t go all that often.  Mostly it’s hit or miss in the clothing/shoes department so I go when I need something, but it’s usually when I’m desperate and half the time, they don’t have what I need.

My daughter is being a typical teenager (technically not a “teen” for another 6.5 weeks, but in my mind, she’s a teen already) and being super picky with her clothes for school.  She’s still finding her style and sometimes our shopping trips are…difficult.  To be fair, sometimes she loves something and it’s a big fat N-O from me so it’s finding the middle ground that can be somewhat challenging.  She’s at that age where she’s too old for the kiddie clothes, but junior sizes are very hit or miss.  Some fitting good enough and others being WAY too big.  Well, we stopped by Kohl’s to look at backpacks, but I told her we should check out the clothes to see if any of the XS’s fit.  Considering she recently told me she would be perfectly happy with just jeans and graphic tees for school shopping…we hit the motherload in Kohl’s!

afterlightWe got these 6 tee’s plus another batman one (yes, she’s obsessed with batman right now and apparently so are the stores!).  All for $8.99 each.  She’s happy, my wallet’s happy…win-win!  Not to mention that I got $20 in Kohl’s bucks that I could redeem as early as the NEXT DAY!  Woot!

Stay with me…I’m getting to my good deal point…the Kohl’s bucks are a crucial part of my story 😉

Anywho, you can’t stop in Kohl’s without looking around because you never know when you’re going to find a good deal.  I have a pair of flats I found there 2 years ago that I LOVED and wore the heck out of, so I usually stop by the shoes just to see if there’s anything I *have* to have.  Well blogland, I was freaking ecstatic to see these babies.

Screen Shot 2013-07-30 at 4.30.29 PM

I have been loving the simple little strappy heels I’ve seen all over the fashion blogs, but most of them are 4″ heels or higher and that is taller than I wanted. These babies though?  Under 4″! The problem?  They didn’t have my size.  Boooo for big feet.  🙁

I really wanted to get them locally, but as a last resort, they were available online.  The minute I got home that night I called the next closest Kohls, but they didn’t have my size.  Then I called the only other Kohl’s that I was willing to go to.  I was on hold for 20 min, but hung up because I decided the guy must have forgotten about me so I made plans to head over there first thing the next morning.

The next morning I was up and atem, snagged a latte on my drive over and made a beeline to the shoes when I got there.  Bad news….they didn’t have my size.  Good news….I found these babies!!

White shoes are all the rage lately, but since the fashion industry is so fickle, I was fine missing out on this trend.  I wasn’t interested in spending a lot of money on something that may be out of style next season.  However, not only were these beauties strappy like I wanted and although the heel looks tall, the small platform makes them very wearable, but the best part….they were on a big sale…originally $75, on sale for $26.

Remember the $20 in Kohl’s bucks from my purchase the day before?  Oh yes I did.  I got these shoes for $6, friends….SIX BUCKS!!  At that price they are pretty much disposable.  lol.  But I think I’ll keep them around for a little while.

Here’s how I styled them for their first night out…

Btw, I totally ordered the nude pair as well.  I mean, it’s pretty obvious I need BOTH, right?!  😉

Latest obsessions…

I don’t know why I haven’t tried it before now, but I recently discovered Iced Passion Tea from Starbucks and I love it!  I wanted something different, but not something sugary or with a lot of calories so the unsweetened passion tea is perfect!

And, hello…have you seen these adorable insulated mason jar tumblers at Target?!  I instantly snatched up two! I have no idea what I need two for (or another tumbler even for that matter), but I HAD to have them!

Remember Saturday’s post about floral dresses?  Yep, the urge was just too much, I had to go shopping.  I ended up with these two pretties!  Both under $50 thanks to a coupon at Express.  😉

No, I don’t have my days mixed up.  I do realize it’s Saturday.  But, I wanted to do a #fiveonfriday post and I didn’t want to wait for next Friday.  😉

I’ve got bridal shower on the brain lately.  My SIL’s is going to be held at a great little cafe with a garden and I think a floral dress would be perfect.  Too bad I don’t have one hanging in my closet right now!

Maxi Skirt (aka crotchless yoga pants) :: #whatiwore

I ran across this hilarious e-card on FB recently and thought, “Omg.  This is so true!” 1044381_501896206542464_931458633_n

And that’s exactly how I wore them the other day!

I put my sports bra & tank on that morning to walk the dog, but when I needed to get dressed to go out to lunch & shop, I did not want to take them off.  So….I didn’t!

This weeks outfit is part of a style challenge from Freckles in April.  Btw, how cute is that blog name?!  I’m seriously jealous I didn’t think of it.  I mean, if you read her little “about me” blurb under her pic on the left column, you could totally sub my name & photo in there!  And her name starts with a “Ka” too!

Anywho, the challenge was to take something from your inspiration board and DO IT!

Inspiration photos :: I know at least one of them is wearing flowy pants, but in both pics, they look like they’re wearing a skirt.  Hey, the goal isn’t to “copy”, it’s to put my own spin on the outfit!  😉

I totally love this splurge one though if I didn’t mind spending a little more and you can even have a diamond placed along the coast for your city!

bad native…

I’ve lived in Jacksonville most of my life.  The only time I haven’t lived here was a short stint in Savannah and then Raleigh, NC for about a year right after I got married. Being a Jax native, you would think that I know all the good places to eat in town, but sadly…I do not.  I don’t work outside the house, I’m a bit of an introvert and I’m reluctant to try new places alone so I end up sticking with what I know.

I am a seriously bad, bad native.

However, I’ve been browsing more hometown blogs lately and have found several restaurants/cafe’s that I’m adding to a must visit list.

For a cup of joe :: Y’all know I love me some coffee so Bold Bean seems right up my alley!

Screen Shot 2013-07-11 at 8.02.10 PMLocated at 869 Stockton Street, Suite 1-2, Jacksonville, FL 32204

For breakfast :: I saw Metro Diner on Diners, Drive-In’s & Dives one night.  I don’t even watch that show really, but it happened to be on the channel when I turned the tv on and I heard “Jacksonville” so I stuck around to see who they were going to highlight.  I must go here for breakfast soon!  The “Yo Hala on the Square” sounds amazing!  Bad for my waistline, but uh-mazing.

Screen Shot 2013-07-11 at 8.12.07 PMLocated at 3302 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, Florida 32207

Brunch :: Since last year, I’ve been following the Jax Truckies and have been introduced to the goodness that is food trucks.  I first heard of The Salty Fig as a food truck, but I just recently realized that they also have a full restaurant and that they serve brunch.  I glanced at the menu…um, they make their grits with goat cheese and they have an amazing sounding french toast dish…that’s all I need to know!

Screen Shot 2013-07-11 at 8.22.55 PM Located at 901 King Street, Jacksonville, FL 32204

Lunch :: Amy’s Cafe looks like exactly the place I’ve been craving lately. Cozy neighborhood restaurant with soups, salads, sandwiches, smoothies and more!  I will definitely be headed here for lunch one day soon.  They don’t have a website, but they have a FB where you can see a sample of their daily specials along with their regular menu.

Screen Shot 2013-07-11 at 9.44.42 PMLocated at 1020 Park St, Jacksonville, Florida 32205

And, last, but not least….dessert!! :: Florida Creamery is an ice cream parlor.  Need I say more?  I don’t think I’ll have a hard time getting the kids to try this one with me.  😉

Screen Shot 2013-07-11 at 9.40.03 PMLocated at 3566 St. Johns Ave, Jacksonville, FL 32205

There are more that need to be added to my list, but this is a good start.  Any Jacksonville foodies out there with suggestions of restaurants I need to try?

feeling quiet…

Does everyone overanalyze their blog posts?  I constantly question myself about anything I think about posting.  I question myself before I write a post, after I write it and even shortly after it’s published.

“Are there too many outfit posts? Are my outfits stupid? Will anyone like them?”

“Ugh, these photos suck.  I want to put that outfit on again and take different pics” (but it never happens)

“I should talk about something more interesting”

“I should write about *insert something I did recently*” (but then lose momentum when too much time has passed between said activity and the blog post)

“I should *insert whatever you think I should be writing about or wearing*”

It’s been 10 days since my last post. *that felt a little like a 12-step program opening statement, but whatevs.  Like I said…10 days.  Forever in blogland time. I keep wanting to post something, but it keeps going a little something like this…

open a new post
wonder what to write
decide that I have nothing to say
close the tab and figure that something brilliant will come to me so then I can write something maybe at least halfway interesting

Problem is…I’ve been on the quiet side lately so nothing is just “coming” to me.  Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been doing stuff.  But when it comes to writing about it (or anything else for that matter), I just go blank or over think it so much that it’s too much hassle.

Hence…this post about nothing!  😉

And since a post is completely pointless with out photos…

military vest + boat shoes :: #whatiwore

Shopping with the kids called for a simple & effortless style.  I love throwing this vest on with an outfit. It doesn’t add a ton of warmth (which is a good thing in FL!), but it makes me feel a little more put together than I would feel otherwise.

2013-06-30_0001vest :: shirt (H&M) :: boyfriend jeans :: sperry’s

I picked up this awesome army/cargo/utility (or whatever you wanna call it) vest a couple weeks ago at Kohl’s.  I’ve had my eye out for an army type vest for a few weeks so when I tried this one on, I knew I had a winner!
