Did you know?

Every TWO minutes an American is sexually assaulted and there are almost three.hundred.THOUSAND victims….every.YEAR!

Wanna know something else…

Jailed-rapists December 2014

WHAT THE WHAT?!

Only 2 out of 100 rapists will spend even one day in prison?

It’s mind bogglinginfuriatingscary

and true

I hope my daughter is never in the position of needing to defend herself, but the truth is, 1 in 5 women are targets of attempted or completed sexual assault while they are college students and in 90 percent of the reported cases, the victim knew her or his attacker.

I think it’s extremely important for ANY female to know that they are strong and completely capable of fighting back against an attacker.

So, last Sunday, I dragged my teenager with me to an Abduction & Rape Response Tactics class. It’s a monthly class offered by The Women’s Defense Company here in town.

We’ve all heard various ways to keep ourselves out of dangerous situations…

  • be aware of your surroundings
  • have your keys ready before getting to your car
  • lock your doors
  • don’t walk alone

And all of those ways to keep yourself safe are important! However, as important as prevention is, I think it’s equally important to know what to do if you are actually attacked. We can be aware of our surroundings, but having your guard up 100% of the time is very unlikely and that is when you may find yourself in a scary situation.

In the A.R.R.T class over the weekend, we learned about which body parts on an attacker are the most vulnerable, which of our body parts are good weapons and a some basic moves to get out of common attack situations.

I have to say that one of the biggest “a-ha” moments I got from the class was…”attack your attacker”. It sounds a bit crazy and totally opposite of what your mind might be telling you to do, but after the instructor explained it, it made total sense. If you’re about to be attacked, chances are your attacker will just run after you and he/she will catch you from behind…which is a terrible position to be in. So, unless you’re confident in your ability to outrun an attacker (marathon runner? Not me!) or help is a short distance away (not likely), you’ll have a greater chance of getting away from your assailant if you incapacitate them before running to get help. By facing your attacker and preparing to defend yourself, you stay in control of the situation and more likely to have a favorable outcome.

In addition to learning some great defense techniques in the class, we participated in two simulated attacks. No matter how much knowledge you have, if you can’t put the techniques to use in a real life scenario, that knowledge is basically useless. I can’t even describe how nervous I was to be pretend attacked. I knew it wasn’t “real” and I knew I wasn’t really going to be hurt, but my heart was pounding in my chest, my adrenaline was pumping and I was sweating buckets. The first attack I didn’t fair so well. I got away from my attacker, but I panicked at first and forgot most of the techniques! Which is totally normal, but it’s why the simulated attacks are important. In the second one, I performed a lot better and used a few of the defense moves we were shown.

If you’re in the Jacksonville area, I highly recommend The Women’s Self Defense Company. They were very professional, friendly, knowledgable and eager to answer any questions we had. I’ll definitely be going back for more classes and taking my friends and family members with me. Practice makes perfect and as a bonus, it’s pretty empowering to feel strong and capable.

How do you think you’d fare if you were attacked? Have you taken any self defense classes? If not, what are you waiting for?

Weekly Highlights

Yes, that title really says, “weekly highlights” and yes, I’m talking about LAST weeks highlights.

I started this post on Friday while I was killing a little time, before heading to breakfast with my SIL, by sitting in a local coffee shop, sipping my iced vanilla latte, listening to some oldies playing over the house speakers.

Photo on 4-17-15 at 8.26 AM

Me at said coffee shop, killing time, trying to take a pic without looking like I’m taking a pic

I kept opening my laptop all weekend trying to finish this post before Monday, but here I am…it’s now Tuesday and I’m still working on it.

At this point I should just scrap the whole thing, but dang it, I already spent time getting this post together so I’m going to finish it…late or not! 😛

Okay, weekly wrap up commencing…

Last Wednesday was MAH BIRFDAY! Woot! I did a little Sephora shopping earlier in the week to snag my sweet Beauty Insider Birthday gift (super awesome NARS lip duo!) and then we went to dinner at Bonefish Grill the day of my birthday. Not to mention my little birthday breakfast with my SIL on Friday and I’m due to have a birthday breakfast/lunch with my mom soon! 37 ain’t half bad so far.

My goofy kids would barely stand still for a photo.

Don’t laugh, but I finally took the time to figure out how to borrow e-books from library. All I have to say is…why did I wait so long?! It sucks that a lot of the ones I wanted had a waiting list, but I did find a couple that didn’t and I got in the virtual line for ones that I was interested in reading. Gold star to me for taking advantage of the resources we are privileged to have access to!

We have a local coffee shop that even though I had visited it once, I was still kind of intimidated by it. On the recommendation of a local Instagram friend I ordered an Iced Vanilla Latte and I am intimidated no more! I’ve quickly become obsessed…they’ll probably know my name by heart soon. On the up side, since I have to get dressed and go inside to order, no more driving the kids to school in my PJ’s.

I’ve been getting in some regular workouts. Not as regular as I should be because I’ve been super sore after each one and I don’t have nearly enough time to get in good shape for the mud run that’s happening in 3 weeks, but I’ll be in better shape than I am now!

Lilly Pulitzer for Target – Did ya’ll see the craziness that went down the morning LP went on sale at Target?! People done lost their minds. They are material items, ladies. Let’s all just take a chill pill. And don’t even get me started on the people who bought a crap ton of it so they can re-sell it! Err.

Thug Kitchen *warning* NSFW or kids who can read  – I don’t love the use of “thug”, but this website cracked me up. So much so that I’m even thinking about buying the cookbook.

Okay, I’m sure more happened that I wanted to share, but that’s the bulk of it and at this point I just want to get this post published and move on to more current happenings. 🙂

Your turn…What’s the latest in your life? Anything fun, cool, happy, crazy? Any good jams you’ve had on repeat?

One step forward

I’ve been trying to get back on the healthy train by getting back to regular workouts and eating better.

I recently decided to cut gluten out of my diet (it’s been a week today!) to see if some of my health issues are related to my gluten intake and I signed up for a mud run in May.

Now, you’d think those two things would have been the catalyst that propelled me into healthier ways, but instead I find that I’m taking one step forward and two steps back. Yes, I do know that the more common saying is “two steps forward, one step back.” Which makes what I actually said, worse!

Last week I started walking. It wasn’t much, but I thought if I can just get myself out there, I’ll be more motivated. And for the most part…it worked. Then the weekend came along and my body was feeling tired from the several days of walk/jogs so I gave myself permission to forego the daily sweat. I was doing well. My eating was pretty good and I felt great.

Today I feel out of control. I haven’t snacked a ton, but my drinking is buh-nanas. And, no, not that kind of drinking. I did have a half glass of wine, but the rest of my drinks were non-alcoholic. I just could not be satisfied today with only drinking water. I wanted coffee, tea, wine, etc. The only ones I really regret are the Teavana tea and the wine. Otherwise I probably wouldn’t chastise myself so much. I started off my day with a green smoothie so all my drinks weren’t necessarily bad. I just had too many flavored/non-water drinks and very little plain water. Drinking is my kryptonite. It’s like liquid snacking. I like to have something to sip and water just doesn’t have the same effect on my brain as something flavored. Clearly I have a problem. Three of my last five Instagram photos are of me sipping on a tasty beverage! I think I need a new hobby.

Oh well, onwards and upwards. *puts on big girl panties* Tomorrow will be better, I’ll make sure of it!

Other than my liquid snacking, today was otherwise a pretty good day. It was one of very few days out of the month that my hair was did and I had a full face of make-up on. Of course I only thought of taking photos after I changed out of my outfit and was sitting on the couch slacking. (I’m a terrible blogger) I did snap a couple pretend-to-be-glam photos (in my workout clothes that I didn’t workout in I might add) while I was using Photobooth , on my laptop, to try on my new Nars lipstick pencils because I was too lazy to go to the bathroom mirror. 😛

Happy Monday party peeples! I hope everyone had a great start to their week.

Under the Tuscan Sun

DSC_4808

If I click my heels together three times, maybe I can blink myself back there…

roaming the unfamiliar, yet quaint neighborhoods…navigating the cobblestone streets, treasures hiding around every corner…eating gelato once, twice, three times a day…more pizza and pasta than I can handle!

*sigh*

I’m missing Italy today.

I spent 30 min researching how to make a caffé latté at home. I’m sure there are other ways, but I settled with a moka pot, illy coffee and a milk frother.

mokapot

Italy has been high on my bucket list of places to visit for awhile, but I really fell in love with wanting to visit after watching Under the Tuscan Sun so it seemed only fitting to pop it into the blu-ray and watch it again today.

To complete my Italy reminiscing, I got 100+ of our vacation photos edited. *happy dance*

I may have been feeling a little nostalgic today, but all in all, it was a pretty good way to start the week.

Ciao Bella!

Five on Friday

Whaddup?! I’m baaaaaaaack!

I’m finally starting to feel myself after being back in the states since Sunday. On Monday I thought I was doing so great…I didn’t nap, I woke up at a normal time, went to bed at a normal time, got dressed in real clothes, went out to lunch with my girl. On Tuesday the boy was home sick and we just hung around the house and chilled all day, but still no nap. Then I crashed on Wednesday. I took a 4 hr nap like I was drugged. I made myself get up, thought I was going to be screwed at bedtime, but no, I went to bed at a normal time. I’ve taken a nap every day since Wednesday, but today’s was only 1.5 hrs. I’m hoping this is the last day! I’m tired of napping and not getting much done.

While I have a buttload of photos and memories I want to share from Italy (which was ah-mazing btw), that post is going to have to be next week some time when I get the rest of my photos edited and have more time to write.

On my mind this week…

I recently started to try and figure out Google+ and man do I feel dumb. It feels so complicated! It tags my posts automatically, I don’t like that just anyone can put me in a circle and WHY are there people who I have no idea who they are, in my feed?! Argh. I found this tip article. Not sure how good it is, but clearly I need some help figuring out how to work Google+. If you have any tidbits please pass them my way!

I didn’t make a big purchase over in Italy, like I did in France, but I did make a purchase right before my trip. I ordered the THEIT camera bag and I love it! It was big and a little heavy with my gear, but so cute and NO ONE guessed it was a camera bag.

I’m not going to really get into much Italy stuff until I blog about it, but let’s just say that I was slightly spoiled by their Caffe Latte’s! I neeeeeeed to be able to make it JUST like they did. I only had one bad caffe latte while I was over there and it was only bad because it was too hot. All the other times, they served it at the PERFECT temperature for drinking! My only regret was not getting to have one more often.

Speaking of coffee…Starbucks is celebrating the 20th birthday of their Frappuccino by offering a Birthday Cake Frap from March 26-30th. I’m not sure if it’s being advertised in Starbucks, but if you didn’t know, now ya do! I haven’t tried one yet, but I will definitely be having one this weekend.

In addition to coffee, I have recently become obsessed with Teavana (Starbucks owns Teavana if you didn’t know. I didn’t until I was in there recently). I really want to like more than just iced black tea and I always try Teavana’s tea samples when I pass, but none have really tasted that good to me. Until the other day. It was a Youthberry + Orange tea blend, just slightly sweetened and it was delicious! Then I saw how easy it was to make it and I was hooked! Now I’m on a mission to find more flavors that I like. I want the whole tea set up too with the special pot and rock sugar.

K, I’m off to grab dinner while my hubby is headed home from the airport. I’ve only seen him for 1 day since I got back from Italy. Can’t wait to hang with him tonight.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

#MicroblogMonday

The countdown is on! In 27 days, the teen and I will be driving to Orlando to start our journey to ITALY!!!!  I’m so freaking excited! But also, in true Katie fashion, I’m getting really anxious too. I’ve already had a few traveling dreams where things go horribly wrong and I know I’m crazy, but I’ve already started my packing list and gathering my list of what I need to take other than clothes. Obviously, I need a chill pill sumthin’ serious! That or yoga. I should really make yoga a priority in these next few weeks. I always feel so zen when I go regularly.

Since I haven’t been to Italy yet, here’s a throwback pic to that time when the teen and I went to France (2013).

I’m always looking for better/easier/less stressful ways to travel…What’s your best travel tip?

I bid you adieu

Dear Cupid,

Hello, you adorable winged cherub! Aren’t you just the cutest? Flying around shooting love darts into people.

It’s so good to be in love, isn’t it?

Which is why you have a such a hold on people. Humans love to be in love.

However, I’m sorry to inform you that I am now disenchanted with you and your day of love.

I have come to the realization that today is just another day.

Why did I ever let this day make me feel bad for not being in love or having a Valentine or get my hopes up that you, Cupid, might pick me to shoot your arrow in to so that gorgeous man I set my sights on would fall in love with me? Why should I feel so privileged and lucky that I got some cheesy stuffed teddy bear holding a red heart on a day that told my boyfriend/husband he should buy me something so I would know how much he loves me? (Btw, it doesn’t show love. I got a huge teddy bear for Valentines Day one year and then got my heart broken 2 months later. So, yeah, it means nothing.) Why should I be upset with my husband/boyfriend when he doesn’t make me feel like a princess on this one day out of 365?

You know what I figured out? I actually don’t like to get those gifts that every Tom, Dick and Harry are buying for their girlfriends and wives. I don’t want a dozen red roses that eventually die. I don’t want to go out to dinner with the rest of America. Sitting in a crowded restaurant on one of the busiest nights of the year is not my idea of fun or romance.

No, I’d much rather my husband show me love whenever he feels it. I’d much rather go out to a nice meal on a quiet Tuesday. I much rather be given a gift when my husband finds something amazing that he knows I’d love or buy me something I’ve wanted, but wouldn’t buy myself. He’s rather good at that, you see. He likes to buy me presents and spoil me for no reason.

It’s the little things too though. Like when he takes me to bed after I’ve fallen asleep on the couch at the end of the night. Or when he takes the dog out at night because it’s cold outside and he knows I hate it. Or when I find hearts made out of unconventional materials in random spots around the house. Or when I get a text in the middle of the day with a song that reminds him of me.

Yep, those are the things that show me my hubby loves me.

So you can keep your chocolates (mostly made up of ones that I take one bite out of and then put back), your red roses, your stuffed teddy’s that are sold on the side of the road, your $79 diamond pendants, and the rest of your love themed presents. ***

I’ll stick with my husband showing me love any day he chooses.

Signed…Happily Married in Florida

***this does not apply to my sweet kiddos. I love getting anything they give me whenever they want to give it! 🙂

P.S. This doesn’t mean I’m a Valentine hater. Just deprogrammed from being needy on this particular day.

It Was Me All Along // Book Review

If you had asked me a few years ago what my favorite genre of books was, I would have told you murder/mystery. It’s still mostly the case, but last year when I made a concerted effort to read more, I realized I have another genre I really like…memoirs.

I’d tried to read memoirs before. Back when Oprah was still on TV and she would rave about certain books, I was pulled to read a couple…or at least try to. I started A Million Little Pieces and loved it, but when I was about three-fourths of the way through, it came out that the author embellished a little (or a lot…I can’t remember). Anywho, after that I was sort of bummed out that what I had been reading wasn’t all true. I think it would have been different if I’d know from the beginning, but after reading the bulk of it, I felt duped. So I never finished it. Then came the massively popular Eat, Pray, Love. UGH! I tried reading that particular book several times, but it was so B.O.R.I.N.G that I eventually gave up trying. I didn’t read a ton at the time, but I was completely turned off from memoirs after the second memoir let down. I figured I’d just stick to what I know I like and what didn’t usually let me down.

Last year’s reading threw me for a loop though because some of my favorite books from the year were memoirs. I loved Brain on Fire, Glitter and Glue and Wild so when It Was Me All Along by Andie Mitchell was one of my book options on Blogging for Books, I snatched it up before they were all gone.

DSCF4253

It Was Me All Along, a memoir // Andie Mitchell, the author of the wildly popular food blog, Can You Stay For Dinner?, writes about her mind and body journey of losing 100+ pounds, keeping it off and also keeping her love of food. I’ve never struggled with the emotions or feelings she writes about and I don’t have 100lbs to lose, but I still found her journey inspirational and captivating. The book opens with a binge session, goes right into her early childhood and follows her through the teen years and into adulthood. I really enjoyed reading about her journey from rock bottom to the woman she is today.

Disclaimer: I received this book from the Blogging for Books program in exchange for this review. All views in this post are my honest, unbiased opinions.

Life Lately

Oh hi.

*waves energetically*

Yes, yes, I know, I’m back from yet another unplanned hiatus. I’m not trying to disappear, I swear.

Remember back when I was doing NaBloPoMo and I said posting every day was hard, but easier at the same time? That’s because when I’m posting every day I don’t feel the need to have big, incredibly entertaining, awesome posts where I try to cram everything that’s been happening or that I want to share into one blog post. By posting daily I could just ramble about whatever was on my mind at the moment. Yet here I am, not posting often enough and feeling the need to have these super awesome and personable/helpful/cool posts. I’m not sure any of my posts are those things, but I like to think that at least some of them are.

So, let’s see…what’s been going on with me lately?

I’ve started my gym routine back…again. It seems like I say this every few months and I inevitably fall off the wagon. I’m determined to stay on top of that freaking wagon this time though dangit. I’ve had to take some extra rest days due to soreness and being busy so I’m a little behind schedule, but I’m just going to keep plugging along and not worry about how far behind I’m getting. I’ve already started to notice subtle changes and even though I hate working out, I love feeling strong and fit.

IMG_9506

Speaking of working out, I got some new bluetooth headphones. I’m not sure if I love them yet, but I’ll keep you posted. I like my old bluetooth ones, but I don’t like that they hang around my neck. When I laid down on benches or the floor while at the gym, they would fall off. Unfortunately, these new bluetooth ones start hurting my ears after about an hour. I’m going to try some different tips though and see if that makes them more comfortable. I very much like that I don’t have to worry about them falling off while I’m jumping around or laying on benches! I think for long term wear, I’d still wear my LG ones.

Book update: Even though I’m pretty behind in my reading goal for 2015 (only 3 in January 🙁 ), I did manage to finish my latest book from bloggingforbooks. Review coming soon!

I started a (very) part-time job. It’s some behind the scenes tech grunt work that allows me to work remotely most of the time, but it’s kinda perfect for me right now as I ease back into the working world.

IMG_9507

This past weekend the teen was out of town on a school trip (her first out of town trip that I didn’t chaperone! I thought the hubs was going to give himself a heart attack. He was tracking her with the Find my Friends app the whole time. lol. FWIW, she made it back home safe & sound). On Friday I had date night with my favorite almost 12 yr old and then we shipped him off to Nana and Pappy’s on Saturday so the hubs and I could have a date day at the theatre. We saw The Book of Mormon and…Oh.my.word…I was laughing hysterically most of the way through it. There are a few somber moments and a few slow songs, but for the most part, it’s hilarious! Btw, if you’ve seen the show, but don’t have the soundtrack, it’s available on Amazon Prime for free download. I say if you’ve seen it because it’s got some explicit lyrics that may not make sense or seem out of place if you haven’t seen the production. Listen at your own risk if you haven’t seen and loved the musical. 🙂

I was going through the photo roll on my phone to see what I’ve been up to since I blogged last and sadly this is the bulk of it. Just living day to day. Wake up, make lunches, get kids to school, do a bunch of random stuff that involves some combination of cleaning/grocery shopping/reading/working out/napping/slacking/working, kid 1 gets off bus, head to pick up kid 2 at school (curse you after school activities), come home, feed family, get ready to do it all over again the next day. Wash.Rinse.Repeat.

I hope you’re still dropping by my little corner of the internet even though I post sporadically. Anything exciting happening with you lately?

Minted + Freckled Latte

Back when I was a newlywed (all of 20yrs old) I couldn’t wait to send out holiday cards at Christmas time. I had a paper address book of friends and relatives and I would go to Hallmark to search for the perfectly adorable card to send to all my loved ones that I could sign, “love, Katie & Eric” and feel like a full on grown up.

I know the holidays are over, but bear with me a minute. I do have a point I’m getting to.  🙂

Over the years I felt less of a need to feel like a grown up and sending holiday cards fell by the wayside. It started feeling more like a chore and life got busier as we started growing our family so I just stopped one year. Then when I got more interested in photography and saw all the beautiful cards my peers and mentors were sending out, I felt the need to send dazzling photo holiday cards that I created myself. Back then there weren’t a lot of pre-made photo card options. Shutterfly was one of the few places that had designs readily available, but no self respecting photog was going to send out a Shutterfly designed card. Oh no. It had to be masterfully designed and printed at only the top quality printers. (warning: no offense to anyone who uses or used Shutterfly, this was likely just been my delusional thought process at the time) 😛 Unfortunately creating photo cards to send to the printer was a huge ordeal. It required photoshop and clipping masks and digital elements and creativity! Creating my own cards lasted about 1-2 years and then the work of putting together the cards outweighed the act of sending them out so I stopped again. At the time, we didn’t receive a ton of holiday cards so I didn’t feel bad about it or feel the need to send cards out.

Well, this past holiday season that changed. It was the first time in years that I was bummed I hadn’t sent out any cards. As the beautifully designed cards started rolling in, I noticed a theme. A lot of them had one little word, in small print, on the back…Minted.

What is Minted?

In their own words, “Minted is community of independent artists and designers creating beautiful, customizable products”

In short, they sell customizable holiday cards, birth announcements, wedding invitations, wall art, party supplies, planners and more! They print on heavy premium card stock and will even print addresses on the card envelopes for you.

Here is just a small sampling of my favorite designs from the site…

Forget to send out holiday cards? Send New Years ones!

One of my favorite products that Minted offers is wall art! I’m always looking for ways to decorate and they make it so easy! They sell just the prints themselves or with a frame! They have original art, but also customizable art. These are a couple of my favorites that use photos…

I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to use Minted for my next event/holiday or wall art purchase!

**Full Disclosure :: I was compensated for this review, but all views in this post are my honest and unbiased opinions. I really do think all of these products are super adorable and you should definitely visit Minted for your stationary needs!
